OUT OF ORDER

Out of Order (OOO) is Maryland Art Place's (MAP) annual salon-style exhibition and silent auction, where every artist who registers is accepted and invited to hang one original work wherever they choose, transforming the gallery into a floor-to-ceiling display of creativity.

Each April, the exhibition brings together hundreds of artists, from students and emerging talents to established professionals.

KIDOOO

KIDOOO is MAP's youth version of Out of Order, taking place each April alongside the main event. KIDOOO was created as an opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a major arts venue, extending MAP's services to students in elementary, middle, and high school level art classes.

The exhibition follows the same salon-style structure as Out of Order, accepting one piece from all artists under 18 who register.

UNDER $2500

UNDER $2,500 is MAP's annual winter exhibition and charity auction featuring original artwork priced at $2,500 or less by emerging and established artists.

Proceeds from every sale are split equally between the participating artist and Maryland Art Place, directly supporting artists and MAP's year-round exhibitions, programming, and educational initiatives.

BENEFIT EXHIBITION FAQ

WHY DOES MAP HOST BENEFIT EXHIBITIONS?

Unlike many contemporary art galleries, MAP does not take a commission on artwork sold during our regular exhibition programming. Our annual benefit exhibitions are the only exhibitions where we collect a commission. For these shows, proceeds from each sale are split evenly, with 50% going to the artist and 50% supporting MAP.

Revenue from our benefit exhibitions directly funds MAP's operations, allowing us to continue offering free exhibition and public art opportunities, as well as affordable studio spaces for artists.

Our benefit exhibitions are also designed to be as accessible as possible for early-career artists. With a lower barrier to entry than our regular exhibition program, they provide an opportunity for emerging creatives to exhibit and sell their work while supporting MAP's mission.

When do applications open?

The application dates depend on the exhibition! Out of Order and KIDOOO are one-day install exhibitions, meaning there is no online entry period. To submit, artworks must be delivered in-person on the install date,  which is typically held the first weekend in April. To receive updates on each year's Out of Order, subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on Instagram.

Applications for UNDER $2500 typically open in mid October. Application status notifications are typically announced in late October, but may be announced in early November depending on application volume.

who can apply?

Our benefit exhibitions are intended for all artists, regardless of where they are in their creative career. Out of Order and KIDOO are not juried shows, meaning we accept all works that match the submission guidelines.*

UNDER $2500 is juried, but we still encourage amateur and early-career artists to apply.

*Submissions are limited to a single piece of artwork per artist. Artwork must be sized at 30" x 30" or smaller. We accept 2D and 3D works; all  2D pieces must come framed and ready to hang.
